Profile Of Eagleby
Eagleby is a suburb of Logan City in Queensland, Australia with a population of approximately 8,400. It is located on the southern bank of the Logan River at the juncture with the Albert which forms the southern and eastern boundary. Eagleby is northeast of Beenleigh, and was originally a suburb of Beenleigh.
The Logan City Bus Service, TransLink 563 runs from Eagleby from 6 am to 7 pm weekdays with a reduced service on Saturdays. The 553 runs at the west end of River Hills Road hourly into the evenings and on weekends, however this does not service the majority of homes in Eagleby. Most of the homes in Eagleby lie between 2km and 6km
from Beenleigh Railway Station.
There is a Post Office at Eagleby Shopping Plaza at the corner of River Hills and Fryar Roads. The crossroads is the centre of the suburb, and also has the State School and local pub next to the shopping centre complex. Major shopping centres and services are at Beenleigh and Logan Hyperdome at Loganholme, which are both easily reached by bus.
Eagleby is also the home of the Beenleigh Distillery, which was established in 1884, and changed hands several times of the years until it closed in 1969. It was then purchased in 1972 when it was again modernised and began producing whiskey, brandy, vodka, gin and ouzo. A flood in 1974 destroyed some of the buildings and all of the records were destroyed. The property changed hands again in 1980 and a dam which had existed since the early 20th century was rebuilt to protect the investment. Since that time a tourist centre including a small museum and tavern were added to the distillery and became known as the Beenleigh Distillery and Moran’s Wharf under a tourist park licence.
The famous Driza-Bone Factory is also located at Eagleby. The Austalian film “The Man From Snowy River” put our Driza-Bone coats before the world public.
Always proud of our unique Aussie style, Driza-Bone coats are a favorite gift to official visitors to our country and purchased by other famous visitors, including Prince Charles, Nancy and Ronald Regan, and the entertainer Liberace once bought 17 of the coats for his entourage.
A tourist attraction at Eagleby is the Eagleby Wetland Reserve, which is a reclaimed wetland around a water treatment plant on the Albert River and is located in the northern end of the suburb. Featured are various bird habitats such as melaleuca and brackish swamps, freshwater lake, woodland, care fields, and open grassland. 203 Australian native bird species have been recorded in the Reserve, including 17 of the 24 Australian Raptors and almost half of the species found in Queensland. The Eagleby Wetland Reserve is a popular birding location for avi-tourists, as well as locals.
