Profile Of Fig Tree Pocket
Fig Tree Pocket is a suburb of Brisbane, Queensland with a popualtion of approximately 4,000, and is located 8 km south-west of the Brisbane CBD.
Placed within a pocket of the Brisbane River, the suburb is relatively remote, devoted mostly to low density housing, and is one of Brisbane’s most green and tree-filled suburbs. Because of its remoteness, Fig Tree Pocket has low levels of noise pollution, caused by limited vehicular traffic and minimal construction work.
The Pocket is also home to some of the most expensive riverfront property in Brisbane and Australia, with one property selling for AU$9.8m to an energy company founder in 2008 and another sold by Virgin Blue founder Rob Sherrard, for AU$7.15m in early 2009 – these prices are substantial considering the economic climate existing at the time they were sold.
Over 59% of households in the area are comprised of couples with children, 31% are couples without children and 8% are single parent families. Stand alone houses account for 99% of all dwellings, with large homes on large blocks, and plenty of green land space. The large blocks of land and abundance of wild untamed bush give Fig Tree Pocket a semi-rural feel, even though it is close to the city.
Fig Tree Pocket is home to one of Brisbane’s oldest and most loved attractions, the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary which was established in 1927. Officially recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records, the Sanctuary is the world’s largest koala sanctuary, with 80 years of experience and over 130 koalas.
Lone Pine offers various activities and presentations on Australian wildlife throughout the day including the Aussie outback farm experience with the sheep dog show performing their amazing mustering skills three times daily and watch the amazing eagles soar high in the sky at the bird of prey free flight show, performed twice daily.
There are several schools to choose from in Fig Tree Pocket including:
Brisbane Montessori School; Fig Tree Pocket State School and The Glenleighden School.
Some noteworthy places of leisure in Fig Tree Pocket are the Fig Tree Pocket Pony Club; Fred Daniel Tennis and Yogini: Yoga For Women.
Despite the absence of stores of any kind, with the nearest major shopping complex being Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, the area is serviced by two Brisbane Transport bus routes – the 430 and the 445 – both of which have a terminus at Mandalay Park.
Allsports Shopping Centre, Amazons Central and Graceville Shopping Centre are also nearby and make it easy to get your essentials without a lot of travel time.
