Profile Of Lutwyche
Lutwyche is a northern inner-city suburb of Brisbane, located 5 km from the city’s central business district with an approximate population of 3000. It is quite a small suburb, with only a handful of streets but boasting busy Lutwyche Road and Lutwyche Shopping Centre. Still relatively undiscovered by renovators, Lutwyche has a mixture of houses of all ages and types and blocks of units. Over 43% of households in the area are comprised of couples without children. 26% are couples with children and another 24% are single parent families. Separate houses account for over 43% of the dwellings in this area, and units account for a further 47%. There are a variety of housing styles in this area, including older (but usually beautifully renovated) workers cottages and more modern brick homes and unit blocks. ‘Conon’ is a herigage-listed house in Lutwyche. It was built in the 1860s and originally sat on a ten acre parcel of land owned by Robert Cribb, a Brisbane politician and property dealer. As the suburb developed the land surrounding the house was subdivided. The suburb is named after Alfred Lutwyche, who once owned the land in the area, and was the first resident judge in Moreton Bay in 1859. He acquired the large area of land between Kedron Brook and Lutwyche Road. The area was first settled in the 1860s.
Brick making was concentrated principally in the Lutwyche-Kedron district in the 1870s – 1880s, which then included parts of Windsor. The Sandgate railway in the 1880s led to the opening of new housing estates in Lutwyche and the suburb was incorporated into the Town of Windsor in 1904.
Lutwyche Road is lined with many small shops and restaurants in addition to the Centro Lutwyche shopping centre. Kedron Brook, a creek lined with parklands and a bikeway, forms the north-western boundary of Lutwyche.
Lutwyche is well served by frequent express and all-stops Brisbane Transport buses which run along Lutwyche Road to the city. Prior to December 1968 the suburb was served by frequent tram services which converged along Lutwyche Road from Chermside, Kalinga and Stafford, with the Stafford line branching off at Bradshaw Street, Lutwyche. Further south Grange trams branched off Lutwyche Road at Maygar Street until these services combined to provide an off-peak service of a tram every 2 minutes along Lutwyche Road in the late 1950s.
